NEW GUEST PROJECT #4 – Musica per la radio | Jonathan Frigeri

NEW GUEST PROJECT hosts projects that RAMradioartemobile has deemed related to its themes. It therefore proposes from time to time a focus on research by artists, musicians and sound artists on an exchange basis.

NEW GUEST PROJECT #4 – Music for radio | Jonathan Frigeri:

In radio broadcasting, music is presented in a pure form, devoid of visual elements and spectacle typical of live concerts.
The fragmented music merges with the texture of our everyday life, and tends to accompany, rather than replace, everyday activities.
Music on the radio is background and must support an existing structure and leave room for discussion, for other sounds, for other sound events. Clothing music that is not invasive and allows other things to exist.

It is necessary to think of radio not only as a medium, but rather as an instrument in its own right, and to think deeply about how music specific to this instrument can exist.
It was and remains necessary to see radio not only as a medium but also as art. Radio art is discordant with radio and music in their respective traditional perceptions. In particular, music, in its traditional dissemination, does not adapt efficiently to the radio medium.
For example in radio music listening, the concept of beginning and end is negligible, as the listener can connect in the middle of the composition. These parameters must be taken into account when creating music for radio. The very concept of radio includes the idea of a listening place, which is different from the broadcasting place. This principle of not having a definite place, but many indeterminate places implies not having an unequivocal end and determinate manifestations, as each listener hears a different work and creates his or her own final version from a framework of possibilities.
The place of radio art is therefore the place where one listens to it, thus introducing the idea of the open work that means not constructing final acoustic results. Beyond this concept of dissolution of the traditional concepts of the completed or closed work of art, the radio space makes two infinities cohabit, oscillating between the infinity of the human nervous system and the vast deep space. This characteristic is typical of wireless imagery, in which the radio material does not consist of sound alone, but rather of this intermediate place between the here and the there.

Radio space takes shape in the imagination of the listener or in the shared imagination of all listeners, and is not tied to a specific geographical or architectural location. It has the capacity to create its own temporal dimension. This non-real radio space coexists in my kitchen and my car, but also in the homes of unknown individuals.

Music broadcast on the radio is not under our direct control; we can only decide whether or not to listen to it. In this context, the act of listening remains largely an event whose programme is completely outside our control. It is the music itself that reaches us, it is not we who actively seek out the music.
Radio broadcasting involves parameters unique to it:
– It is not tied to a material medium: through radio any possible sound can reach us.
– Broadcasting in real time, simultaneously with its performance
– The absence of a single, precise place to listen, but rather many indeterminate places
– The radio enters the listeners’ intimacy
– Distracted and casual listening: need to gain attention in a domestic environment where the social constraints of listening and silence are less strong
– Competition from other conversations in the intimate space
– An interrupted concept of the linearity of time
– The place where the music comes from is different from the place where it is heard
– The radio is background not foreground
– The loudspeaker is different for each listening place and often mono and of mediocre quality
– Mass but individual listening
-The uncertainty of who listens to what and how
– The transition into deep space, that intermediary place between the here and the there

Restrictions have consistently influenced this genre of art to a greater extent than the classic five score lines that have shaped composition. This list is certainly not exhaustive, but we believe that these paradigms must be taken into account when creating music for radio.
